Q24N (EFE) The government of President Donald Trump has indefinitely frozen the immigration applications of people to the United States through a series of programs created by his successor, Joe Biden, which benefited people from several Latin American countries and Ukraine.
In an internal document from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), released this Wednesday by CBS, the Executive also ordered a freeze on pending applications from those seeking to enroll in the program and obtain permission to travel to the United States, known as “humanitarian parole.”
The decision affects the beneficiaries of the CHNV programs (for citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela), Unidos por Ucrania (for Ukrainian citizens), and the family reunification process for Cubans, Ecuadorians, and Colombians.

In total, more than 800,000 people entered the US with these immigration benefits, which granted a temporary two-year permit to live and work in the country.
The DHS directive comes a month after Trump, within hours of taking office, decided to end the “parole” for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans. The program, established by Biden (2021-2025) at the end of 2022, allowed more than 500,000 people to migrate to the US.
The idea of these programs, as Biden government officials explained at the time, was to grant these migrants legal entry into the US so that they could then benefit from other immigration benefits or programs such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or asylum.
The new decision, therefore, threatens to leave in legal limbo those people who are currently in the country after having entered with the “parole” and are waiting for their immigration processes to be resolved.
According to the CBS network, the Government justified the measure alleging alleged concerns about “fraud or national security” in the current system of the Government to award immigration benefits.
DHS did not respond to requests for comment from EFE to confirm the measure.
