The Caribbean province (Limón) is adorned with its people, a great variety of colors and solemnity to celebrate the Día de la Persona Negra y la Cultura Afrocostarricense to rescue the values and cultural elements of the Afro-descendant population.
Since the eighties, Costa Rica has celebrated the Día de la Persona Negra (Day of the Black Person), according to decree No. 11928. Later, the celebration was expanded to include the Día de la Persona Negra y la Cultura Afrocostarricense, according to Law No. 8938 of 2011.
The choice of August 31 as the date for the celebration is not a coincidence, it is due to the commemoration of the First International Convention on the situation of black people, in Madison Square Garden, in New York, on August 31, 1920, and as a result of the discussions at that convention, “The Declaration on the Rights of Negroes” was promulgated.
