U.S. Embassy warns of attacks on cars in the area of the San José airport

QCOSTARICA — The United States Embassy in San José, Costa Rica, warned about the attacks that vehicles traveling in the vicinity of the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) are receiving.

The alert for travelers traveling in Costa Rica arose on Wednesday, February 5, that is, one day after the visit of the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to Costa Rica.

The Embassy detailed a significant number of scenarios that occurred in the vicinity of the air terminal and that involved a traffic route from the Airport to Belen, Heredia and Santa Ana.

The road where the problems are occurring goes around the east side of the airport, the road that leads from the Autopista General Cañas (Ruta 1) and then continues on Ruta 111, which passes by the DHL warehouse.

“In 2 recent incidents, people in the empty area adjacent to the DHL warehouse threw rocks at passing vehicles, trying to force them to stop. During one incident, the rocks caused damage to the windshield and roof of the vehicle, but the driver did not stop and quickly left the area with moderate damage to his vehicle.

“In another incident that occurred in the same area, the driver did stop his vehicle, after which the assailants robbed the individual and stole his car,” the U.S. Embassy said in a statement.

The Embassy recommends that travelers be cautious when visiting the area or the routes from the airport, as well as consider alternative routes. They explained that if a similar situation occurs, do not stop, continue forward progress, and contact 911 when it is safe to do so.

For many, the DHL route that leads to Belen and then to Santa Ana is the quickest given the traffic congestion.

Alternates include continuing travel on the Ruta 1, past the Rio Segundo, exiting to the right in the area of the Intel plant or continuing on the Ruta 1 to the Firestone plant, exiting right (now open) to Belen. Another option is exit from the Ruta 1 at the EPA store.
