U.S. cancels entry visa for two Costa Rican legislators for being a threat to cybersecurity

QCOSTARICA — A couple of weeks after Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, visited Costa Rica, two Costa Rican legislators were stripped of their visas to enter the United States

They are Johana Obando and Cinthya Córdoba, both from the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP).

The decision is announced amid growing tensions between the United States and China over the implementation of 5G technology in Costa Rica.

The legislators have been investigating the decision of the Costa Rican government to exclude Chinese companies from the 5G infrastructure, an issue that has generated controversy and accusations of foreign interference by the United States, but also by China.

Obando had even reported having been the victim of surveillance and death threats, which has intensified the climate of uncertainty surrounding the case.

The news was confirmed by the PLP in its press chat, but at this time, it has not made an official statement.

The cancellation of visas comes in a context of alignment of the Rodrigo Chaves government with Washington’s policy, both during the administration of Joe Biden and with the current one of Donald Trump.

The exclusion of the Chinese company Huawei from the competition for the development of 5G in Costa Rica has been a flashpoint in diplomatic relations between the three countries.

Wang Xiaoyao, China’s ambassador to Costa Rica, said in mid-January that it seemed to her that the Costa Rican government did not want China’s technical and scientific cooperation in 5G.

It should be recalled that on February 4, during a visit to Costa Rica, Marco Rubio insisted that the Trump administration could sanction Costa Rican officials who collaborate with foreign actors that represent a threat to U.S. cybersecurity.
