QCOSTARICA — Traffic fines will not increase in 2025 and, on the contrary, will have a reduction that will range between, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT).
The reduction is because the interannual inflation in June was negative (-0.03%), so the adjustment will be downwards.
Thus, the highest penalty will be ¢363,639 for infractions such as driving under the influence, making a U-turn or a left turn in a prohibited area, driving at more than 120 km/h, and driving with a suspended license, according to Carlos Rivas Fernández, acting director of the Consejo de Seguridad Vial (Cosevi) – Road Safety Council.

The lower value sanctions will also apply to infractions such as disregarding the vehicle restriction or driving with an expired license, as well as not carrying the basic legal implements, such as the fire extinguisher or triangles, which will be ¢26,062.87 in 2025.
If it doesn’t see much from the current fines, you are correct. The reduction in the highest of fines is only ¢109.13 (or US$0.21) and ¢7.82 (US$0.02) on the lower end.
This is the third time fines have been reduced since the current Traffic Law, published on October 26, 2012, came into effect.
