The start dates of the rainy season by region in Costa Rica

QCOSTARICA – The rainy season is around the corner. With the arrival of the first isolated rains in different parts of the country, like in Santa Ana and Cuidad Colon, on the west side of San José, over the weekend, a change in climatic conditions is anticipated, thus marking the beginning of the rainy season.

The national weather service, the Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN), the top dog in Costa Rica when it comes to forecasting weather, has issued forecasts that indicate a possible advance in the start of the 2024 rainy season, especially in the Central and South Pacific regions of the country.

According to IMN projections, the rainy season is expected to begin early in the Central Pacific between April 22 and 28, and in the South Pacific between April 16 and 19. However, for the other regions of Costa Rica, it is estimated that the start of the season will be “normal.”

The IMN forecasts that during April, May and June, a 15% increase in precipitation is expected in the Central and South Pacific. In the Central Valley, a 10% increase. Likewise, a 5% increase in precipitation is anticipated in the North Pacific, Guatuso, Upala and Los Chiles. However, in the Northern Zone and the Caribbean, a 15% decrease in rainfall is expected.

In the months of July and August, a 15% increase in rainfall is projected in the Central, North Pacific and Central Valley. In addition, a 10% increase in precipitation is expected in the North Pacific, Guatuso, Upala and Los Chiles, as well as in the South Pacific. On the contrary, a 10% decrease in rainfall is expected in the Northern Zone and the Caribbean.

For the September, October and November quarter, a 15% increase in rainfall is anticipated in the Central and North Pacific, Central Valley, Guatuso, Upala and Los Chiles. In the South Pacific, a 10% increase in precipitation is projected. However, a 15% decrease in rainfall is expected in the Northern Zone and the Caribbean.

When can you expect the start of the rainy season in your area?

  • Central Pacific: April 22 to 28.
  • Central Valley: between April 29 and May 8.
  • North Pacific: May 8 to 13.
  • Northern Zone: from May 11 to 13.

It is anticipated that the rainy season will persist until the conclusion of November.
