The “new” dry season: will the rains return?

QCOSTARICA — After a sunny and windy weekend in most of the country, the question is, will rain again or not?

As is usual in January, Costa Rica is in the dry season. However, last week more than 100 people were affected by the rains, and had to take refuge in shelters from the flooding.

The word from the national weather authority (Instituto Meteorológico Nacional – IMN) is that although it is not common, it is not strange that it rains in some regions.

“At this moment we are in the dry season and although it is unusual, it is not strange that rains occur in the Central Valley. Specifically, for this week, rains could occur for the Caribbean and Northern Zone (characteristic of this month) starting on Wednesday,” said the IMN.

Forecast for the coming days

For these first days of the week, stable atmospheric conditions will predominate throughout the country.

“The presence of a dry air mass, which is characteristic for this time of year, together with trade winds of weak to moderate intensity, generate conditions of low humidity in the country,” explained meteorologist Juan Diego Naranjo.

Thus, it is expected that slightly to partially cloudy skies will predominate, with warm temperatures in the following places:

  • Guanacaste Coast
  • Puntarenas
  • Limón
  • Northern plains

As for temperatures, in the Central Valley, they could be around 26°C to 28°C, which will generate a sensation of heat.

“However, at night the same action of the wind will make cool temperatures perceived, although the thermometers are registering between 17°C to 19°C,” added Naranjo.

Rain starting Wednesday

The IMN forecasts a change in weather conditions starting Wednesday, with an increase in humidity and the intensification of trade winds. This will bring rain to the Caribbean and the Northern Zone, while the Pacific and the Central Valley will remain with a low probability of precipitation.

This is due to a high pressure system that will move from the United States towards the Atlantic Ocean, causing an increase in the intensity of the trade winds.

This is the weather forecast for the rest of the week according to the IMN.

  • Occasional rain is expected in the Caribbean and the Northern Zone, especially during the mornings and nights starting Wednesday. In the mornings, possible drizzle is expected in the mountains and their surroundings. At night, partial to total cloudiness with rain is expected.

In other regions:

  • In the Pacific and the Central Valley, a low probability of rain will continue.
  • Partial cloudiness is expected in these regions during the afternoons.
  • Winds will be moderate in the GAM and Guanacaste.
  • During the night, the Pacific and the Central Valley will have light to partial cloudiness, with winds in Guanacaste and the GAM.

The official IMN forecast for today, Tuesday, January 14:

This Tuesday, the weather will continue to be mostly stable in the Pacífic slope, and the trade winds will remain moderate. A few clouds are expected tomorrow in the Pacific, with partly to mostly cloudy in the Caribbean and Northern Zone. Partly cloudy is expected in the country during the afternoon.

During the day there is a possibility of occasional rain in the Caribbean and Northern Zone, of light to moderate intensity.
