The Economist: Costa Rica is the second country with the highest risk of another Donald Trump presidency

QCOSTARICA — A recent report from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), titled “Trump Risk Index” (TRI), details that the closed partners of the United States are among the most exposed to a new Donald Trump presidency.

Costa Rica would be the second most vulnerable country, according to the index, with an overall exposure score of 59.1.

Mexico ranks as the most exposed country overall, with an index score of 71.4, driven by its high trade and migration exposure.

In Latin America, among the ten most exposed countries globally, they are followed, from highest to lowest exposure to risk: Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Panama, El Salvador and Honduras.

The EIU Trump Risk Index uses quantitative indicators to measure the exposure of the United States’ 70 largest trading partners. The study assesses countries’ exposure based on three main pillars: trade, security and immigration.

The report says countries with low exposure to changes expected under Mr Trump are generally those with more distant or less reliant ties with the United States.

“Some close US allies are assessed to have the highest security exposure. (…) Several Latin American countries including Costa Rica and Panama that are in receipt of US military aid but have no or limited defense spending of their own are also at the top of the ranking,” reads the report.
