Semana Santa 2025 public holiday schedule

QCOSTARICA — The idea is to promote rest, family reflection, and better planning of vacation periods in the public sector, The Rodrigo Chaves administration announced the schedule for public institutions and public officials’ vacations for Holy Week.

Holy Week (Semana Santa) begins on Sunday, April 13 commemorating the seven days leading up to Easter on Sunday, April 20. However, only Thursday (April 17) and Friday (April 18) are mandatory holidays.

Under this measure, bureaucrats will enjoy vacation time on April 14, 15, and 16, 2025, during Holy Week. Thus, officials will have ten consecutive days off, considering Friday, April 11 (Juan Santamaria Day), is a mandatory holiday.

Work will resume as normal on April 21.

This measure aims to reduce the accumulation of vacation time, optimize institutional resources, and promote the reactivation of national tourism, encouraging activity in sectors such as hotels, restaurants, transportation, and recreation.

Regarding the implementation of this guideline, each institutional leader will define staff vacation time in specific cases, such as the Ministry of Public Education, the Attorney General’s Office, the National Registry, police forces, and emergency response institutions, ensuring the continuity of essential services.

Institutions that need to maintain operations during these days must adopt the necessary measures for their proper functioning and promptly inform the public about the availability of their services.

The private sector follows a different schedule. While some businesses may be open all week, others close only on the mandatory holidays. In some cases, businesses and professionals’ offices, such as doctors, lawyers, etc, may close all week, following the public holiday schedule.
