San Carlos in Alajuela was one of the cantons most affected by the heavy rains. The flooding of rivers and streams caused a series of incidents in the Florencia and Aguas Zarcas sectors, according to the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) – National Emergency Commission.
As a precaution, municipal authorities closed the passage through the Aguas Zarcas River, a measure that will remain in place until Saturday pending an assessment and changes in weather conditions.
Other areas also suffering damage from the rains on Friday, in most cases due to problems with the sewerage system, were San Ramón, Moravia, Santo Domingo, Zarcero, Carrillo, Tibás, Coronado and Santa Ana.
An acceleration of trade winds will continue to bring downpours generated by the proximity of the intertropical convergence zone and the high humidity content will continue to affect different places throughout the country, including the Greater Metropolitan Area of San José.
This year, the rainy season that began in May has been brutal. And the worst months are yet to come, particularly September and October, before the change in season to dry by December.
