San Jose Airport will welcome the high season with new measures and improvements

QCOSTARICA — In anticipation of the peak or high tourist season that runs from December 2024 to April 2025, the Juan Santamaría International Airport, better known as the San Jose Airport (SJO), has begun implementing a series of operational and infrastructure improvements to optimize the experience of its passengers and ensure a smooth and safe operation during this period of high demand.

“At AERIS, we are committed to offering a quality and efficient experience to our passengers, especially during the peak season, when the flow of visitors increases significantly. We have prepared in advance to meet this demand by implementing new technologies and coordinating with key entities. These actions allow us to improve transit times, reinforce security, and facilitate connectivity to more international destinations. Our goal is for every traveler to live the Pura Vida experience that Juan Santamaría Airport has to offer,” said Ricardo Hernández, Executive Director of AERIS, administrator of Costa Rican’s primary international airport

With a projected increase in passenger traffic and the number of commercial operations, the airport, operated by AERIS, has reinforced its facilities and services as follows:

Improvements in Terminal

  • Self-check-in: The goal is to achieve 50% use of the self-check-in kiosks to speed up passenger flow.
  • New queue distribution: The space in the main aisle has been optimized through better organization of airline queues.
  • Self Bag Drop System: A new system that facilitates the delivery of luggage to speed up the check-in process.
  • Advanced security technology: A pilot plan with tomography in the security area will allow for faster and more accurate baggage screening.
  • Increase in service personnel: Reinforcement of service personnel of the manager for service and queue management.

Measures in the area of air operations

  • Preventive maintenance: Work has been carried out on the runway, lighting system and taxiways to ensure the safety of aircraft.
  • Coordination with air operators: To mitigate possible delays or early flights, proactive coordination measures have been taken with airlines and air traffic control.
  • More staff in parking lots: With the increase in passenger flow, staff in parking areas has been increased for better traffic management.
  • Resource planning: Optimization of the use of aircraft parking positions and increase in the number of buses to serve passengers in remote locations.
  • Support from Government Entities: During the high season, coordination measures have been implemented with key institutions:
  • General Directorate of Immigration and Foreigners: It will have 144 officers on staggered shifts to ensure a constant flow of passengers.
  • Airport Police and General Directorate of Traffic Police: Security and traffic controls will be intensified in public and exit areas.
  • General Directorate of Customs: Additional officers will be assigned to expedite the customs process.
  • Costa Rican Red Cross and Costa Rican Firefighters: Both emergency bodies will be available with additional resources for any contingency.
  • Increase in Routes and Frequencies: For this season, Juan Santamaría Airport will offer greater connectivity thanks to new routes and additional frequencies. This includes destinations in North America, Europe and Latin America, with new operations by airlines such as GOL from São Paulo, Brazil, and an increase in frequencies by other airlines on key routes.

With these actions, San José Airport reaffirms its commitment to providing a safe and efficient experience to its passengers, standing out as a strategic connection point in the region.

An area that we can hope the AERIS plan tackles is the concentration of flight arrivals during the noon and evening hours, causing long lines at immigration check-in and a bottleneck at the two scanners used at the customs check.
