QCOSTARICA — The Juan Santamaría International Airport or San José airport (SJO) has been recognized as the “Best Airport in Latin America and the Caribbean” in the 5 to 15 million passenger category, according to the ASQ Airport Service Quality Awards 2024, organized by Airports Council International (ACI World).
This recognition, based on surveys conducted directly with passengers, highlights the joint efforts of SJO, its operator AERIS – a CCR Aeropuertos company – the airport community, government authorities, and other key stakeholders to improve the user experience and maintain high standards of service, efficiency, and satisfaction.
“SJO is the main gateway to Costa Rica, and our commitment is to ensure that each passenger’s experience reflects the essence of the ‘Pura Vida’ experience. This award is a testament to the joint efforts of all stakeholders in the airport community who work daily to offer world-class service,” said Ricardo Hernández, Executive Director of AERIS.

Over the past year, the airport has implemented several improvements that have strengthened its position in the region. These include its new visual identity, aligned with Costa Rica’s values and culture, as well as technological advances to optimize processes. Additionally, infrastructure improvements have been made and the SJO Customer Experience Committee has been consolidated, reaffirming its commitment to excellence in passenger service.
Recognition based on passenger experience
The ASQ Awards are considered the leading global benchmark for measuring the airport experience. Through real-time surveys, various aspects of service quality are evaluated, such as ease of process, staff friendliness, cleanliness, service, comfort, and operational efficiency.
In its 2024 edition, the program reached a record of nearly 700,000 surveys completed globally, with more than half of the world’s travelers passing through airports assessed within the ASQ program.
“In today’s dynamic world, where passenger expectations are higher than ever, airports must go above and beyond to stay ahead. The ASQ 2024 Awards recognize those airports that create memorable and seamless experiences, completely transforming the passenger journey and helping to shape the future of air travel,” said Justin Erbacci, Director General of ACI World.
The SJO will continue working to strengthen its position in the region, focusing on modernization, sustainability, and service quality, ensuring an exceptional travel experience for the thousands of passengers who transit through the terminal each year.
