Ruta 27: More than a highway

QCOSTARICA — In an editorial, the new voice of the Grupo Extra, publishers of the Diario Extra newspaper and ExtraTV television, among others, the Ruta 27, commonly known as the San José – Caldera highway, is much more than just a highway.

“Road infrastructure is the backbone of any country’s economic development, and in Costa Rica, Route 27 has become a clear example of the challenges we face in terms of maintenance and modernization of the road network.

“The data revealed by Lanamme are more than worrying. 53.29% of the road has ‘lizard skin,’ a deterioration that compromises not only the quality of the pavement, but also the safety of the thousands of users who travel daily between San José and the Pacific. The overall quality of the road is at a critical 44%, which represents a significant risk for drivers, businessmen, and the tourism sector.

“This situation goes beyond the simple need for maintenance. We are talking about a fundamental artery that connects the Greater Metropolitan Area with important productive and tourist areas. The problems of drainage, poor signage, and deterioration of the pavement not only amount to a risk for road safety, but directly impact the economic competitiveness of Costa Rica.

“The call is clear: immediate and strategic intervention is required. The authorities of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) have started talks for the expansion of the road, which is a positive step. However, it is essential that this initiative does not remain only good intentions.

“The business and tourism sector and citizens need quality infrastructure that facilitates mobility, reduces travel times and guarantees safety. Investment in road maintenance should not be seen as an expense, but as a strategy for economic development.

“Negotiations with Globalvia must be transparent and a priority, seeking a balance between investment, quality of service and economic impact for users. We cannot allow our main connection route to deteriorate to limits that compromise national security and development.

“It is time to move from reports to action. Lanamme has provided a clear diagnosis, now it is up to the State institutions to implement comprehensive solutions that return this road to its optimal condition of transitability.

“Route 27 cannot continue to wait.”
