“Respect for the division of powers” legislator tells President Chaves

QCOSTARICA – A call for respect for the division of powers was made by legislator Daniela Rojas, of the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC), given the announcement by President Rodrigo Chaves to veto the bill to reform the current radio broadcasting law.

“This initiative, of which I am a co-proponent, would without a doubt have my vote in case it is vetoed and must be resealed – resello in Spanish – (…) It would also have my full support to seek the 38 votes that are necessary to obtain the reseal,” said the legislator.

“Reseal” is an instrument that allows the Legislative Assembly to overcome the executive veto, but on condition of the formation of a qualified majority, that is at least 38 votes of the 57 legislators in the Legislative Assembly.

The law dating back to 1954, requires an urgent update given its promulgation in a very different context, in respect of the constitutional right to freedom of expression and the press, as well as the democratization of the media, added the legislator.

On Wednesday President Chaves announced the veto of the bill 23.673, pointing out that it would be “gifting” millions of colones for the use of the frequency to René Picado and the partners of Channel 7 (Teletica).

In his statement, Chaves took advantage to criticize the alleged advertising rate of Televisora de Costa Rica (Teletica). “A minute and a half for you, and the rest of the year for me. What a deal! Let’s see, that is, the length of time in the triple-A category (…)  I am going to veto it if it progresses (…),” said the president.
