Reopening of the La Amistar bridge has a date, July 25

QCOSTARICA — The Ministerio de Obras Publicas y Transportes (MOPT) is confident the La Amistad Bridge in Guanacaste will be re-opened on July 25.

A statement from the MOPT indicates that work includes installing eight new supports, using special jacks listing the bridge some two centimeters, making it possible to demolish the old supports and place the new ones.

In addition, repairs are being carried out on the bridge tower, 80 meters high, and on its substructure, where 30 tons of steel have already been placed.

The rehabilitation of the bridge has a total investment of US$2.6 million, including the replacement of the road surface and the installation of new lighting and road signs.

This structure, 780 meters long, which is located between the cantons of Cañas and Nicoya, is made up of two sections, a 260-meter cable-stayed section, which is supported by tension cables, and another fixed 520-meter section, supported by 8 concrete piles.

The bridge plays a crucial role in connecting the southern areas of the Guanacaste province, including popular tourist spots like Nicoya, Samara, and Nosara and many more, some of the country’s most important tourist zones.

Due to ongoing repairs on the bridge, travelers are advised to take alternate routes such as Ruta 1 and Ruta 21 or utilize the Naranjo or Paquera ferry from Puntarenas to reach their destinations.

The July 25 date is significant as it celebrates Guanacaste Day, marking the anniversary of the Annexation of Nicoya in 1824. The day sees a local surge of travel to and from the Guanacaste province, including the traditional visit by the President and Cabinet to the province.
