QCOSTARICA – Monday afternoon, at 2:14 pm, the Poás Volcano registered a major eruption. The explosion generated a column of gas and ash that rose considerably above the crater, according to reports from the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (OVSICORI) – Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica.
The eruption column reached a height of at least 2,000 meters above the crater.

Authorities reported that the ash is moved mainly toward the highlands of Grecia and Sarchí, recommending the population wear masks, cover their noses and mouths with wet cloths, and seal doors and windows to prevent the entry of particles.
The Poás Volcano remains closed to the public, and unauthorized entry into the protected area is prohibited due to the risk posed by recent volcanic activity.
The Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) – National Emergency Commission, reminded the population that the Poás Volcano National Park and the Toro Amarillo district continue under an orange alert issued on March 31 ; and the green alert for the cantons of Alajuela, Poás, Grecia, Naranjo, Río Cuarto, Zarcero, and Sarchí (except the district of Toro Amarillo).
The CNE reminds the public to stay informed through official channels and follow all preventive recommendations in the event of possible new emissions.
