QCOSTARICA — Don’t be overconfident today, the restriction on license plates returns in San José.
The Ministry of Transport (MOPT) made a reminder to all drivers who circulate in San José that, this Monday, January 6, the restriction on license plates will return.
This Monday, vehicles with license plates ending in 1 and 2 will be restricted from circulating in San José after two weeks in which the measure was not applied.

For Tuesday, restricted from circulating in San José are vehicles with plates ending in 3 and 4, on Wednesday 5 and 6, on Thursday 7 and 8, and Friday plates ending in 9 and 0.
“The new Northern Ring Road area, which runs from Calle Blanco to La Uruca, is not within the prohibited zone; you can drive along that section, even though it is restricted,” the MOPT reminded.
The fine for not complying with the measure is ¢26,000.
In addition to the vehicle restrictions, Transit officials will also be monitoring for vehicles that do not have their 2025 Marchamo.
The Marchamo (circulation permit) was due payable not later than December 31. Those who have not paid will incur additional costs such as late fees and interest on the original amount, calculated daily.

In addition, drivers behind the wheel of a vehicle without the current Marchamo will face a fine of ¢60,813 and be subject to confiscation of license plates and/or the vehicle. The fine is classified as category D, which indicates that it will be applied to those vehicle owners who put the vehicle into circulation “without being up to date with the payment of circulation fees and mandatory vehicle insurance.”
Be aware that Transito officials can issue multiple fines simultaneously for various infractions, including breaking vehicle restrictions, not having up-to-date Marchamo or vehicle inspection, and any other traffic violations they believe you have committed.
