Pilar Cisneros will run 2026 “Rodriguismo” campaign

QCOSTARICA — Rodriguismo, a movement that will seek the continuity of President Rodrigo Chaves in the next elections, has not yet defined the political party with which it will participate for 2026.

What is confirmed is that the legislator of the current official government party, the Partido Progreso Social Democrático (PPSD), Pilar Cisneros, will be the campaign manager starting in 2025.

“The truth is that there is still no defined party or a defined candidate, but when there is, it is most likely that I will have to be the voice,” Cisneros said.

This is clear to PPSD legislator Ada Acuña, who affirms that they are waiting for Cisneros’ directive to start the campaign. “On our part, we are all waiting for the leadership of Mrs. Pilar,” Acuña said.

Pilar Cisneros, the current voice of the current official government party, the Partido Progreso Social Democrático, in the Legislative Assembly.

It will not be with the PPSD

Apparently, the ‘Rodriguismo’ (the political movement that supports the administration of current President Rodrigo Chaves) will not be through the PPSD, with which Chaves came to the Presidency, that such continuity will be sought.

PPSD was Chaves’ party in 2022.

This is due to the public break between President Chaves and the party president, legislator Luz Mary Alpízar. Mainly due to the division of criteria between the two.

Alpízar was the decisive vote (vote 38) for the legislative “resello” *(reseal) of the project to remove Costa Rica of the European Union Gray List (tax-evading countries).

Chaves condemned this act by the legislator and called her a “traitor.”

With Cisneros as campaign manager and the search for a new political party, ‘Rodriguismo’ faces an organizational challenge for the upcoming 2026 presidential elections.

Despite the obstacles, the movement seeks to consolidate itself as a solid option to maintain the policies promoted by the current administration.

The President of Costa Rica

The President of Costa Rica is elected using a modified [two-round system] in which a candidate must receive at least 40% of the vote to win in the first round; if no candidate wins in the first round, a runoff is held between the two candidates with the largest number of votes.

The president is currently elected in direct elections for a period of four years. From 1969 to 2005 was barred from seeking reelection.

Earlier this year, Chaves said that he could opt for re-election starting in 2030, “if he wanted to and God keeps him alive.” However, he is wrong about that.

Currently, according to Article 132 of the Constitution, an incumbent president becomes eligible to run again after waiting for at least eight years after leaving office

According to Article 131 of the Constitution, to be president or vice president, be Costa Rican by birth and older than 30.

The transfer of powers between the incumbent president and the president-elect will take place on May 8 after the election.
