Partial closures on Paseo Colon in preparation for the Festival de la Luz

QCOSTARICA — If you have to go to downtown San Jose, in particular on Paseo Colón, in the coming days, keep in mind that the security operation for the Festival de la Luz that takes place on Saturday, has already begun, which includes partial closures on this busy road in the capital.

As is tradition, the platforms and bleachers used in the Festival will be installed. While crews will be working at night, from 10 pm to 5 am, interruptions on the major road to downtown will be affected during the day as well.

The head of the Municipal Police of San José, Marcelo Solano, indicated that 1,200 officers from different institutions will work on the operation for the entire festival.

Solano recalled that the sale of liquor within 100 meters of the Festival’s route will be prohibited, so on Friday the Municipal Police will visit the 479 commercial establishments on the route to remind them that the sale of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on Saturday, December 14.

The Red Cross, for its part, will have 100 members and 12 posts throughout the Festival route.

Road closures

From 10 pm on Friday, Paseo Colón will be completely closed to vehicular traffic, so that floats and bands can set up. At 6:00 am Saturday a partial opening is planned, as far as possible, but by 10 am there will be no passage, when Paseo Colón will be completely closed.

Festival de la Luz

The Festival de la Luz officially marks the beginning of Christmas for the people of San José. It includes parades with floats, masquerades, live music, and fireworks. The Festival originated in 1996, when the Municipality of San José organized the first parade of floats and the best bands in the country, offering Costa Ricans a great spectacle of color and joy.

The route extends approximately 3.2 km, starting from the Gimnasio Nacional and entering Paseo Colón in the west of the capital, continuing along Avenida Segunda until reaching the Plaza de la Democracia on the east side.

The Festival de la Luz begins at 6:00 pm with fireworks from the rooftops of the tallest buildings in the Metropolitan Area and ends several hours later.

Many spectators arrive late Friday night and early Saturday morning, braving the night and early morning cold weather, to stake out a claim to the best spots to see what can be called the biggest show in the country,

In years past, crowds of one million or more people (some 20% of the country’s population) would line the route were reported by the newspaper and television news.
