QCOSTARICA — The two-time President of Costa Rica, Oscar Arias, confirmed his resignation from the lifelong position that corresponds to him in the Political Directorate of Parido Liberación Nacional (PLN).
“I have served this country with the best of my abilities from the presidential chair and today I must serve my party by stepping down from the chair that I occupy in the Political Directorate and giving an opportunity to those who will govern the Costa Rica of tomorrow,” wrote Arias.
The decision was confirmed and communicated in a letter dated Thursday, October 17, addressed to the general secretary of the PLN, Miguel Guillén.

“No one is indispensable in politics,” added the winner of the 1987 Nobel Peace Prize.
“Our party and our country urgently need the renewal of new leadership,” said the 84-year-od Arias.
In the letter, he insists on the need to make way for new figures and emphasizes that this is his intention. He adds that he is not thinking about the next four years, but about the next 40.
“Only tyrants cling to power. Democrats, and I am one of them, understand the importance of stepping aside,” stressed the former president.
Oscar Arias emphasized the need to raise “the quality of politics and interest in public service,” in addition to seeking the most honest and prepared. Otherwise, he warns that “the very sustainability of our democratic system is at stake.”
Not retiring from politics, says Arias

The only president in two periods (1986-1990 and from 2006 to 2010) clarified that he is not retiring from politics and that there are many ways to continue working. “I will always be at the service of my country and my party,” he wrote.
“I do not plan to retire as long as God gives me health,” he emphasized while thanking the trust that led him to the Presidency of the Republic.
Legacy highlighted
Miguel Guillén, secretary of the PLN, highlighted Arias’ voluntary decision, which he says “marks a significant moment not only for the Partido Liberación Nacional, but for the entire country.”

“His leadership, both on the national and international scene, has been a source of inspiration and pride for Costa Ricans. The tireless search for peace and his vision of a better world have left a mark on our history and will continue to guide us,” he said.
“His legacy is not measured only in political achievements, but in the profound impact he has had on generations who learned from his example. Former President Arias has taught us to dream of a more just and peaceful country, and he will always be present in the essence of the Partido Liberación Nacional.
“Thank you, Don Óscar, for everything you have given us,” said Guillén.
Resignation of others
Arias’ statement comes days after the PLN General Assembly, which seeks renewal for 2026.
A week ago, José María Figueres and Johnny Araya made the same decision to leave the lifelong positions in that party body, which correspond to them for having been presidential candidates, whether or not they won the elections.
Antonio Álvarez Desanti also expressed the same position, which he would make public at the meeting on Saturday, however, the issue was not addressed.
The PLN must call a new Assembly in November to define the way in which it will choose the presidential candidate for the 2026 electoral process.
