Q24N (EFE) The opposition Nicaraguan Democratic Concertation (CDN-Monteverde) said this week that it hopes to have the support of the elected president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, to overcome the social and political crisis that Nicaragua has been going through since April 2018.
“We hope to have the help and support of the new Government of the elected president, Claudia Sheinbaum, to ensure that (in) our country a democracy is consolidated and the people can elect their authorities democratically,” the Nicaraguan opposition movement in exile indicated in a statement.
CDN-Monteverde also hopes that Sheinbaum, during her mandate, will be sensitive to the crisis facing Nicaragua “due to the constant violations of human rights and the breakdown of democracy caused by the dictatorial regime of Daniel Ortega during his 17 years consecutive years as the head of the country.”

That opposition movement, which wished the elected president of Mexico success in her administration, announced that they will continue to search for a civic and peaceful solution to the crisis that Nicaragua has been facing for six years.
On April 18, 2018, thousands of Nicaraguans took to the streets to protest controversial social security reforms, which later became a demand for President Ortega’s resignation after responding with force.
The protests left at least 355 dead according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), although Nicaraguan organizations raise the figure to 684, while Ortega, who has been in power since 2007, acknowledges that there were “no more than 300” and maintains that it was an attempted coup d’état.
In its statement, CDN-Monteverde, which defines itself as a plural consultation and political action that seeks a civic solution to the Ortega Government and the construction of a democratic society in Nicaragua, also greeted the Mexican people for the election of the first woman president in its history.
They trust that it will contribute to achieving a democratic solution for Nicaragua
For its part, the opposition movement Unamos also joined in congratulating the new elected president of Mexico and trusted that Sheinbaum will play an important role in achieving a democratic solution to the crisis in Nicaragua.

“In Nicaragua, citizen freedoms have been violated and permanent and flagrant violations of human rights continue; “We Nicaraguans continue to fight civically to ensure that democracy, justice and freedom are established in our country,” said the president of Unamos, Luis Blandó, in a written statement.
“Our people are united by old ties of friendship and identity. We trust that, under her presidency, Mexico will play an important role in contributing to achieving a democratic solution for Nicaragua,” he added.
Ortega congratulated Claudia Sheinbaum on her “historic victory” in the Mexican elections, wished her success, and expressed his willingness to work together “in all fields.”
“With admiration and recognition, we wish you the best, and of course, we reiterate our willingness to work together, in all fields, for dignity, respect, sovereignty and the right to peace, security, cultures and life in our countries,” said Ortega.
