Q24N — The Government of Nicaragua on Wednesday canceled the legal status of another 10 associations that operated as non-profit organizations, bringing the total number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that have been illegalized since December 2018 to more than 5,600.
The dissolution of these organizations was approved in Managua by the Minister of the Interior, María Amelia Coronel, according to two ministerial agreements published in the Official Gazette of Nicaragua.
The Ministry of the Interior explained that it unilaterally closed five NGOs for non-compliance with the laws that regulate them and the other five because they requested their voluntary dissolution.

The 10 NGOs that were closed are: the Chinandega 2001 Foundation, the Jinotega Social Club, the Christian Association Proeza en Dios, the Association Commission for Rural Development, the Cristo la Cabeza International Evangelistic Ministry, Twelve Churches, the Association for the Integral Development of Nicaraguans, the Association of Cultural Promoters, the Sí a la Niñez y a la Juventud Foundation, and Bridges to Community.
With the closure of these NGOs, there are now more than 5,600 organizations of this type that have been dissolved after the popular protests that broke out in April 2018 in the Central American country, and in most cases they have ordered the transfer of the assets of these organizations to the State.
Nicaragua has been experiencing a political and social crisis since April 2018, which was exacerbated after the controversial elections in November 2021, in which Ortega was re-elected for a fifth term – the fourth consecutive – with his main contenders in prison and then expelled from the country, depriving them of their nationality and political rights after accusing them of being “coup plotters” and “treason.”
Various countries and international organizations have accused the Government of Nicaragua of violating the human rights of the population in the midst of this crisis in which, in addition to organizations, media outlets and academic institutions have been closed by the Government.
