QCOSTARICA — The rash of accidents on the road, with many cases involving vehicles crossing over into oncoming traffic, has prompted the Ministry of Transport (MOPT) to remind drivers of the danger and the sanctions if stopped by a traffic official.
According to the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT), so far this year, 141 drivers were stopped on the road for invading the opposite lane; another 27 drivers received a sanction for overtaking improperly on a curve, bridge, or intersection.
In both cases, the monetary fine is ¢364,000, and 6 points on the license, meaning that, in order for the sanctioned driver to renew his or her license, they would have to take a road safety re-education course for 5 days.

“We want to reiterate the call for prudence and patience (…) These fines and those for invading the lane and overtaking on curves, bridges or others reflect great irresponsibility, possibly encouraged by excessive haste. School has already started, there are more vehicles on the road, more children,” said Oswaldo Miranda, director of the Policia de Transito (Traffic Police).
Miranda suggested that parents taking their children to school get up earlier rather than drive irresponsibly, in addition to being illegal, is extremely dangerous and can cause accidents.
With the start of the school year last week, the MOPT has stepped up road operations, with more traffic police presence in and around schools and colleges and on the highways.
