QCOSTARICA — Miller Gardner, son of New York Yankees star Brett Gardner, was found dead in a hotel room on Friday, in Manuel Antonio Quepos, Costa Rica. Miller was 14 years old.
Brett and his wife, Jessica Gardner, announced the news through a message on their X account on Sunday, March 23.
Apparently, his parents were aware that he had been ill during his stay in Costa Rica, confirmed by various international media outlets, such as The New York Post and Inside Edition. The United States Embassy in Costa Rica reportedly confirmed the death to Inside Edition.

At this time, authorities from the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) have not provided any details about the case, which is under investigation.
With “great pain,” they explained that the teenager left them “too soon after falling ill,” along with other relatives, “while we were on vacation.”
“We have so many questions and so few answers right now,” they said, “but what we do know is that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21,” Jessica Gardner posted on X.

Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency, the Organimso de Investigacion Judicial (OIJ) told NBC News on Monday, March 24, the 14-year-old boy died of asphyxiation “due to possible food poisoning after apparently ingesting some type of food,”

OIJ agent Juan Pablo Alvarado also the cause of death is preliminary, awaiting an autopsy and a toxicology analys, which according to the OIJ agent, could take two to three months to complete.
