QCOSTARICA — On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, the beginning of the historic female leadership of Claudia Sheinbaum of the Partido Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) took place in Mexico, who takes office with the highest vote that any candidate has ever had and assumes the legacy of one of the most successful governments in the country.
In several and diverse ways, the process of Claudia Sheinbaum’s inauguration in Mexico is historic.
The 62-year-old doctor in environmental engineering, at her inauguration, clearly showed her leadership and the path of a government in which she ensures the continuity of the process called the fourth transformation, which the Morena party promoted since its first term in 2018.

This process, which managed to lift around 8.8 million Mexicans out of poverty in its first six-year term and calmed large entrenched structures of political corruption in Mexico, has been presented as a viable, successful and coherent response of the left to the neoliberal model.
Outgoing president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) leaves the government with a support close to 70%, as one of the most beloved and best valued leaders, while the new president achieved a support close to 60% of the votes in the June elections, which constitutes the highest support in a vote in that country and achieved the majority of deputies as in the governorships subject to election.
In this way, the left-wing Morema movement, created as a social organization in 2011 and constituted as a party since 2014 and which brought López Obrador to power, is consolidated with a viable, democratic and social proposal, with support that is not only consistent, but growing.
Another milestone is that Claudia Sheinbaum is the first woman to take command in the second most populous country in Latin America, more than 70 years after the establishment of the female vote.
Sheinbaum is a political figure who has surprised with her calm lucidity and her firm character, although with a calm expression. It is true that she does not have the natural charisma and very much in keeping with the Mexican idiosyncrasy of her predecessor, but at 62 years old she is seasoned with an unusual capacity for political analysis that she demonstrated in her four years at the head of the governorship of Mexico City.

AMLO’s personal style of government earned him some enemies, among them some of the consensual discourse of the press, which he challenged with a press conference every morning from Monday to Friday, to speak directly to the people and “without intermediaries.”

Since the campaign, some of his critics have pointed out possible and frequent objections to Sheinbaum, although generally subjective, since they look at her with skepticism and have animosity towards her predecessor.
The shadow that López Obrador could cast on Sheinbaum, the challenges in security, economy and foreign relations, the lack of personality to exercise the necessary leadership both in the face of political adversaries and within the party, are some of the concepts that were repeated over and over again in the Mexican and international press.
