Mercado La Cartonera, in a surprise announcement, closes its doors

RICO’s Q — Maybe you have been or perhaps not, the unique commercial center in Santa Ana, Mercado La Cartonera, is no longer.

At the end of the day on Sunday, November 3, it closed its doors after Friday’s announcement that took many by surprise, including yours truly, who had to immediately follow up that it was not fake news.

Despite the statement by a number of the tenants that they will be doing everything to keep going, who directly know the market’s potential, it is not to be. The landlord announced they have 48 hours to vacate.

In the statement, they, the tenants, believe it a “completely unilateral decision” by Mauricio Arce Lara, who appears to be the person who makes decisions about La Cartonera.

La Cartonera opened its doors in 2022, where the renowned cardboard factory (cartonera in Spanish), one of the biggest in Costa Rica, operated for 33 years.

“We inform all our public that we will continue to operate under our usual hours this weekend. Starting Monday, November 4, we will close our doors to the public. Thank you again Costa Rica for all your support and so many special moments. We will always carry you in our hearts,” the administration of the commercial center announced.

La Cartonera is one of the properties that are in the portfolio of the Sociedad Administradora de Fondos de Inversión del Banco de Costa Rica (BCR SAFI), and the Fondo del Comercio y la Industria (FCI).
