Malcolm-Jamal Warner drowns in Costa Rica

Q COSTARICA — Malcolm-Jamal Warner, known for his role as Theodore Huxtable on the hit American series ‘The Cosby Show’, died this Sunday, July 14, at the age of 54 while vacationing in Costa Rica.

According to reports, Warner was swimming with his family at Playa Grande, in the town of Cocles, Limón, when a rip current swept him out to sea around 2:30 pm and prevented him from returning to shore.

The Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) reported that several people on the beach tried to help him, but their efforts were in vain. The Red Cross declared him dead at the scene.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner rose to international fame in the 1980s for his role as the youngest son of Dr. Cliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby) on the popular NBC sitcom for eight seasons, appearing in each of the 197 episodes.

Theo was the only son among four daughters in the Huxtable household, and he would be one of the prime representations of American teenage life and Black boyhood on a show that was the most popular in America for much of its run from 1984 to 1992.

Throughout his career, he also worked as a director, musician, and poet, leaving his mark on various areas of African-American art and culture.
