Installation of public parking meters begins in San José

QCOSTARICA — For some time, street parking in Costa Rica’s capital city has been an issue, given that the parking meters and technology being used by the previous municipal administration was shut down.

Diego Miranda’s administration, which began its mandate on May 1, 2024, signed a contract with the Setex-Alpha Consortium to activate the service for 2,760 parking meters with a series of system innovations.

The winning consortium began operations to refurbish the parking spaces; this includes new collection equipment, area demarcation, and technological innovations to facilitate payment collection.

The hourly rate will remain the same, ¢960 colones; the half-hour rate will be ¢480. The fine for not using or feeding the meters (adding additional time) will be ¢9,600. The parking spaces will operate Monday through Saturday, from 7 am to 7 am, according to municipal sources.

Setex-Alpha will renew all the required equipment, explained Juan José Echeverría, spokesperson for the company, including computers, ticket-writing equipment, monitoring software, and bank interconnections.

In addition, “it will work with the Epark CR app (both for IOS and Android systems), used by one million users, for digital payments.”

This app, Echeverría noted, will make it easier for users to pay with credit or debit cards at parking meters, avoiding the use of cash, in addition to paying at affiliated businesses.

Setex-Alpha will employ advanced technology for monitoring and controlling the service, ensuring transparency and operational efficiency in real time.

Another innovation will involve improving signage at payment points, ensuring efficient and safe use of parking spaces.

“The modernization of the parking meter system not only seeks to optimize the use of spaces, but also to reduce traffic congestion,” Echeverría explained.

Proper use of parking areas will contribute to improving traffic flow in areas with high commercial and tourist concentrations.

The new system will facilitate vehicle rotation, benefiting merchants and users with greater availability of parking spaces.
