QCOSTARICA — The weather service, the Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN), is forecasting a hot morning and heavy rain showers in the afternoon this Thursday and for the rest of the week, as we transition to the rainy season.
“Downpours with thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon for the Central Pacific, Central Valley and Nicoya Peninsula,” the IMN forecasts.
The transition from the dry season to the rainy season has already started in the Central Valley, and over the next few weeks, the rainy season will become more established throughout the country.

According to the IMN, these are the conditions that can expected:
- May 6 to 12: “During this week we expect the rainy season to establish itself in the Central Valley and there will be more frequent downpours than normal in the South Pacific region.
For the South Pacific, weekly rainfall accumulations can be around 120 mm and normal in the Central Pacific with 80 mm weekly.
- May 13 to 20: Very weak trade winds and the presence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone over the country.
The Intertropical Convergence Zone is expected to favor normal rain conditions throughout the Pacific and Central Valley.
- May 21 to 27: According to specialists, the trade winds will be weak due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone over the country.
“This situation favors rainy conditions throughout the Pacific and Central Valley,” said the meteorologist.
The Convergence Zone, located around the equator, is where the northern trade winds collide with the southern trade winds.
“There a region of low pressure, clouds and storms is formed that surround the tropical region,” explained Daniel Poleo, IMN meteorologist.
This cloudiness occurs particularly close to the national territory during the months of April to November, generating the rainy season.
Essentially, it is time to use an umbrella and galoshes (rain boots). Remember to also clean out the gutters.
