Half of Costa Ricans use television as their main source of entertainment

QCOSTARICA — On average, people in Costa Rica dedicate five hours and 27 minutes daily to watching television. For nearly half (49%), the small screen is their primary form of entertainment, whether they are watching movies or novelas.

Although there are several streaming applications, 64% of the population prefer to watch their favorite programs on linear television, simply put, the traditional television medium with content delivered via open air and/or cable. This, according to the Kantar IBOPE Media report, which analyzes the offer of audiovisual content and how it impacts the way Costa Ricans entertain themselves.

For example, the programs with the highest viewership in 2023 were game shows, dramas, newscasts, and soap operas (telenovelas).

The study indicates that women (53%) make up the majority of the television audience, compared to men (45%). Television consumption even varies between generations, with baby boomers (27%) watching the most television, followed by millennials (26%), and generation X (22%).

People under 30 years old are the ones who watch the small screen the least.

When it comes to how many screens are used for information or entertainment, the numbers from the Kantar IBOPE Media study indicate that 41% prefer television and cell phones; 40% use TV, telephone and computer. If that doesn’t seem like enough, 18% use up to four screens (smartphone, laptop, tablet and TV).

“Knowing the form and consumption patterns of audiences is important for companies’ decision-making. For example, more than 2,900 advertisers invested in open and/or pay TV in 2023. In fact, 95 of the Top 100 Advertisers allocated funds to television advertising last year,” commented Bernal Díaz, Regional Manager of Kantar IBOPE Media.

Also, more than one third (36%) of Ticos think that television advertising is interesting and offers something to talk about.

Television and streaming

Half of Ticos think that Online TV streaming services changed the way they watch content. For example, 38% of viewers consult the Internet to find out more about a product or service seen on the screen.

Regarding streaming, 44% of Ticos watch videos through free or paid platforms. On a normal day, 19% of them spend between 30 and 90 minutes enjoying this type of content.

In fact, 42% of people subscribe to a streaming platform. 34% have between 1 and 3 subscriptions; 9%, more than four.

The streaming audience is, for the most part (47%) of people between the ages of 25 and 44.
