QCOSTARICA — The price of premium and regular gasoline will increase between ¢20 and ¢34 colones per liter in the coming days, as approved by the regulator of public services, the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep).

  • Super Gasoline will increase from ¢672 to ¢692
  • Regular Gasoline will increase from ¢643 to ¢677
  • Diesel will decrease from ¢569 to ¢545
  • Propane (25-pound cylinders mostly commonly used in kitchens across the country) will decrease ¢146, from ¢7,535 to ¢7,389.

According to the regulatory body, the adjustment is due to the behavior of international prices.

The Refinadora Costarricense de Petróleo (Recope) – Costa Rican refinery that refines nothing –  submits monthly invoices used to pay for fuels required in the country.

Based on this documentation, a technical report is prepared and submitted for public consultation before the final rates are approved by the regulatory body.

For its part, the evolution of international prices is the determining factor in domestic prices. Each product presents different dynamics; therefore, some rise and others fall.

The single fuel tax was also updated this month, with no changes in its amounts.

  • Regular gasoline: ¢263 per liter, representing 38.9%
  • Diesel: ¢156 per liter, corresponding to 28.57%

According to the law, the tax is used to finance road construction and maintenance, environmental protection, and other purposes administered by the Ministry of Finance.

The new rates will take effect the day after their publication in the Official Gazette (La Gaceta).
