  • Super gasoline will increase ¢12 colones per liter, to ¢671 from today’s ¢666
  • Regular gasoline will increase ¢2 colones per liter, to ¢650 from today’s ¢648
  • Diesel fuel will cost ¢10 colones more per liter, to ¢570 from today’s ¢560
  • And natural gas (propane) will increase ¢2 colones per liter. For example, a 25-pound cylinder typically used across the country from today’s will be ¢7,423 from today’s ¢7,721

The regulator explained that the increase is due to the political context and market movements.

“This adjustment is basically explained by three aspects that pushed prices up. First, an increase in international prices (for fuels) as a result of situations inherent to the geopolitical context and market movements in the northern hemisphere. Second, an increase in the exchange rate in the period of analysis,” explained Mario Mora, Aresep’s Energy Superintendent.

Mora added that the third is “the update of the single tax on fuels in accordance with the executive decree published on January 28, which also involved an increase.”

The Refinadora Costarricense de Petroleo (RECOPE) – the Costa Rican refinery – does not refine fuel, rather it imports the finished product and distributes to retailers (gasoline stations) across the country.

The Aresep defines the prices charged to consumers across the country every month based on inputs from the RECOPE and public hearings.
