QCOSTARICA —  The price of regular and super gasoline and diesel fuel dropped at gasoline pumps across the country this morning.

The new prices are:

  • Super gasoline is ¢669 colones per liter, a drop of ¢16
  • Plus or regular is ¢660, a drop of ¢8
  • A liter of diesel drops is ¢565, a drop of ¢9 colones

On the other hand, the price of propane, or Gas Licuado del Petróleo (GLP) in Spanish, increased. For example, a 25 lb tank, the most commonly used in kitchens across the country, went up ¢253, for a final price of  ¢7,379 colones.

Important to note, fuel prices across the country are the same at every filling station. The prices are approved by the regulating authority, the Aresep, on a monthly basis. Click here for the official prices for ALL fuels.

Long queues

Not directly related to consumers filling their tanks, but rather the dealers or retailers complaining that RECOPE continues to process their requests for fuel manually, their trucks having long waits to get fuel.

Also, RECOPE insists on an electronic verification of the payment (direct deposits) before dispensing fuel, not accepting any payment receipts or vouchers. This increased the wait given that bank verification can be slow in this case.

The manual processing is due to a hack of computer systems on November 27 last at the state refinery that refines nothing.

This results in endless queues of transporters who cannot take the fuel to the service stations. Made worse by the RECOPE not extending hours of operation, until 3 pm.
