Costa Rica’s Ministerio Relaciones Exteriores y Culto (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship), known locally as “Casa Amarilla”, confirmed that Costa Rica suspended diplomatic relations with the Nicolás Maduro regime since 2020, when a Costa Rican official was removed, and the Embassy and Consulate were closed.
In 2023, consular relations were resumed but not diplomatic relations. Currently, there is no diplomatic or consular staff in Venezuela, since Costa Rica provides services from its Consulates in Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic, the Foreign Ministry concluded in a statement issued on Monday.
Monday afternoon, the government Rodrigo Chaves declared Nicolás Maduro’s electoral victory in Venezuela to be “fraudulent.”
Through a message on the social network X (formerly Twitter) by Casa Presidencial, the government declared that it categorically repudiated the proclamation of Maduro as president of the country until 2031, and announced that it would work with the democratic governments of the continent and international organizations to ensure that the will of the Venezuelan people was respected.
Our neighbor to the south, Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino said on Monday that it put its diplomatic relations with Venezuela “on hold” and will withdraw its diplomatic personnel from the country until a full review of Sunday’s presidential election results is conducted.
Also on Monday, Panama joined eight other Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, calling for an emergency meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) Permanent Council, citing concerns about Venezuela’s election. Panama is not the only nation to take a firm stance against alleged electoral tampering.
