QCOSTARICA — The number of women who joined the workforce grew by 13% (100,000 more than the previous year) according to the latest study released by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC).
This percentage is higher than the average for job creation, which is 7.2%, with 149,465 more people employed compared to the same period in 2023.
“The increase in women’s labor participation is a positive sign for the market, but there are still challenges in equal access to employment,” explained Dianny Hernández, coordinator of the Continuous Employment Survey.

Trade and repair have consolidated themselves as the main employment sector in Costa Rica, with 393 thousand workers, followed by the manufacturing industry and the teaching and health sectors.
However, despite this good news, unemployment affects 165 thousand people, of which 95 thousand are men and 70 thousand are women.
The unemployment rate was 6.9%, with no statistically significant variations compared to the same period of the previous year, when it was 7.3%.
On the other hand, teleworking continues to boom: 10.9% of wage earners worked under this modality, which is equivalent to 177 thousand people, with a proportion of 96 thousand men and 81 thousand women.
With these results, Costa Rica closed 2024 with a recovering employment outlook, although challenges persist in informal work and in the generation of sustainable formal employment.
