QCOSTARICA — The Sistema Nacional de Pago Electrónico en el Transporte Público (SINPE-TP) – National Electronic Payment System for Public Transportation – will benefit some 135,000 inhabitants of four more cantons of the Greater Metropolitan Area: Desamparados, San José, La Unión and Curridabat.
This means that users of bus route 72 in San Antonio de Desamparados and its branches will be able to use their credit and debit cards and other electronic instruments to make payments on public transportation. These are the routes Barrio San José, Guatuso Guizaros, San Lorenzo, Linda Vista via San Francisco; Linda Vista via Desamparados; Quebradas Río Azul, Quebrada Honda, Tirrases via San Francisco, El Bosque-La Cabaña-San Francisco and interline.
Carlos Melegatti, director of the Payment Systems Division of the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) assures that with the incorporation of the 65 buses of this new route they already reached almost 700 buses nationwide that already have the capacity to offer electronic payment to their users.

“The objective is to continue extending the system to other cantons of San José, Alajuela, Heredia, and Cartago in the remainder of the year, hoping to reach, according to the established plan, around 1,500 total buses by 2024,” explained Melegatti.
By 2025, it is projected that another 1,500 buses will be put into operation and thus complete the service in the 3,000 units that circulate daily through the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM), where nearly 80% of the country’s trips are made.
According to estimates by Autotransportes San Antonio S.A., around 24,000 transactions are made daily on its different routes, of which approximately 10% correspond to older adults.
The SINPE-TP allows for improved service quality for users. This system has been very well accepted by passengers, who are increasingly using the system both on the trains of the Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles (INCOFER) and on bus routes. To date, the SINPE-TP has already surpassed 15 million payments since it began operations, making around 50 thousand transactions daily on trains and buses using electronic means.
Those who use electronic payment using the SINPE-TP have the SINPE-TP Passenger App to verify their payment history. Users only need to download the free APP on their cell phone and associate their cards.
In total, 696 buses on the following routes accept electronic payment:
