Electricity will drop in January 2025

QCOSTARICA — Starting in January 2025, households will see a decrease in their electricity bills as announced by the regulatory authority for public services, the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (ARESEP).

The drop varies by companies providing the electric service.

In the case of the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), the drop is 7.81%, which means that for households currently paying an average of ¢15,000 colones per month, the drop will be more than ¢1,100.

The drop in rates of other energy distribution entities is as follows:

  • Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz (CNFL) – a division of ICE: 3.74%
  • Junta Administrativa del Servicio Eléctrico de Cartago (Jasec): 13.81%
  • Empresa de Servicios Públicos de Heredia (ESPH): 6.58%
  • Coopelesca (San Carlos: 4.91%
  • Coopeguanacaste: 9.06%
  • Coopesantos: 3.65%
  • Coopealfaroruiz: 7.21%.

According to Mario Mora, Aresep’s Energy Superintendent, although in 2024 the authorities resorted to thermal energy to avoid the blackouts scheduled for May, due to the low level in hydroelectric dams, investments in generation and transmission showed significant reductions, which benefited the eight companies in charge of providing the electric service.

This situation was possible because ICE recorded a 35% reduction in energy production costs, which benefited other distributors nationwide, Mora explained.

“It is important to keep in mind that those companies that depend more on ICE to meet their demand are the ones that benefit the most when there is a downward adjustment in tariffs. On the other hand, some distributors that depend more on their own generation systems benefit less because they buy less energy,” he said.

Mora also assured that these new calculations represent an economic improvement for the country in general, including for high-voltage users, that is, the large energy-consuming companies that create jobs, contribute to exports and to the growth of economic activity.

These changes will come into effect once they are published in the newspaper La Gaceta, expected in the coming days.
