Earthquake Collapses Wall of Costa Rica’s Poás Volcano and Alters Its Internal Dynamics ⋆ The Costa Rica News

An earthquake of a magnitude yet to be determined today collapsed the wall separating the active mouth of the Poás volcano from its internal lake, and the water altered its eruptive dynamics, a scientific institution reported.

The reservoir of the geological structure in the northern province of Alajuela flooded an area where gases reach temperatures of about 800 degrees Celsius and increased the combustion of water vapor, although without serious threats to the surrounding population, added the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory (OVSICORI), quoted by the newspaper Delfino.cr.

Very energetic explosion

The volcanic formation then registered an eruption that expelled ash and rock fragments up to 500 meters high, considered by experts to be the most energetic explosion of the Poás volcano since May 8, Delfino.cr added.

The waters reduced the direct release of hot gases, but increased internal pressure, leading to the morning explosion, explained Ovsicori specialists. The crater has emitted several ash explosions in recent weeks, which coincided with heavy rains on the mountain.

Employees of the National Park, which serves as a tourist center around Poás, observed intense downpours accompanied by sustained ash emissions, which lasted for several hours.

Aftershocks

Ovsicori reported six shallow earthquakes in the vicinity of the volcano over the last week, in addition to slight ground uplift in the area, signs that reinforce the system’s instability.

Gas studies, the scientific body notes, also show a marked reduction in sulfur dioxide (SO₂) emissions, of which between 600 and 100 tons fell daily between September 6 and 9.

Ovcicori explained that the gas could be dissolving in the water now deposited above Mouth A, or reflect deeper changes in the volcano, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions.

Specialists noted that, although the alert level remains at Category 2 (warning), any visit to the national park carries risks, as there is a possibility of sudden explosions with the release of eruptive material in areas frequented by tourists.
