Driver of digital platform shoots alleged assailants, kills two, injures a third

QCOSTARICA — Shootings have become a common daily occurrence in the greater metropolitan area (GAM) of San José and to a more or less extent in other parts of the country, in particular the province of Limóm.

The latest occurred in the early morning of this Tuesday when three young men were shot dead by the driver of a digital platform (ie Uber, Didi, InDrive, etc,), who defended himself against an apparent robbery, resulting in the deaths of two of the assailants.

The three assailants, around 2:00 am, in the area of Villa Esperanza de Pavas, on the west side of the capital city, allegedly requested a ride with the intention of robbing the driver, identified by his last name, Henao, 33 years of age.

When the car arrived, the assailants attacked the driver, but he had a gun and fired in self-defense, killing two suspects and seriously wounding one.

Two of the assailants, identified by their last names Mena Caballero, 29, and Ruiz Badilla, 24, died at the scene, while another young man, Mena Caballero, 19, was taken in serious condition to San Juan de Dios Hospital.

Henao was detained as agents of the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) investigated.
