QCOSTARICA — Costa Rica’s Judicial Police, the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), arrested a 41-year-old female officer, identified by the surname Vargas, of the country’s intelligence service, the Dirección de Inteligencia y Seguridad (DIS), for apparently accepting money from criminal groups in exchange for information.
Randall Zúñiga, director of the OIJ, confirmed that the woman is being investigated for the crime of procuring impunity.
“The events go back several months in which an investigation managed to link her with the possible delivery of information to criminal groups. Apparently, what she did was provide said information to these gangs, and in exchange she received a payment, supposedly,” explained Zúñiga.

Likewise, the director of the OIJ highlighted that the official was arrested at noon on Monday near her house in La Trinidad de Moravia, and is now in the hands of the Public Ministry for the corresponding procedure.
For its part, the Executive Branch of the Government indicated through a statement that it will take all pertinent administrative measures in order to safeguard the integrity of the institution and the information it protects.
The DIS is the intelligence service and the body attached to the Ministry of the Presidency of Costa Rica responsible for informing the President on matters of national security.
“If necessary, all disciplinary procedures stipulated in the internal regulations will be applied; likewise, it reiterates its commitment to due process and the country’s regulatory framework,” the letter details.
