Diesel to drop ¢21, but regular and super will increase in September

QCOSTARICA — It will be weeks, if approved, that diesel fuels will drop in price, while super and regular gasoline will increase.

Costa Rica’s refinery that refines nothing, the Refinadora Costarricense del Petróleo (RECOPE), presented on Friday a new adjustment in the price of fuels that will is now subject to review and approval by the regulatory body.

The RECOPE request has super gasoline rising ¢2 per liter, while regular gasoline would rise ¢8.

The price of a liter of diesel could drop by ¢21, from the current ¢619 to ¢598.

Other fuels, such as propane, kerosene, aviation fuel, and others will see price changes as well.

The RECOPE explains the requested drop to lower demand for diesel and gas for heating in the north (ie the United States and Canada) during the summer as the main reason.

However, the company also pointed out that high temperatures force a change in the vapor pressure of gasoline to avoid its evaporation, which increases costs. Additionally, the hurricane season adds pressure on prices.

Last Monday, August 5, Aresep approved a reduction in gasoline and an increase in diesel, adjustments that are already in effect.

Midweek, regular gasoline prices dropped ȼ22 and super ȼ18, while diesel increased ȼ18.
