Q24N (Confidencial) Nicaragua’s dictator Daniel Ortega reappeared in public after almost two months (56 days), on February 21, 2024, at an official event for the ninetieth anniversary of the assassination of Augusto C. Sandino.
During the event, Ortega mocked the 317 Nicaraguans stripped of their nationality, making them “stateless” and took the opportunity to warn that those who “betray the country” simply cease to belong to the country.
The mockery of stateless people began by paraphrasing the San Albino Manifesto, written by Sandino in 1927. “16 years ago Adolfo Díaz and Emiliano Chamorro stopped being Nicaraguans, like those who have stopped being Nicaraguans and are now in the United States. Now they are Yankees, they must feel very happy to be Yankees,” Ortega read, smiling.

“Others are in Spain, they feel Spanish, very happy to be Spanish, they must even speak like Spaniards,” he continued, imitating the Spanish accent.
Between May 2023 and January 2024, Spain granted nationality to 110 Nicaguans who became “stateless” on the orders of Daniel Ortega.
During his speech, he continued paraphrasing Sandino, “Emiliano and Díaz stopped being Nicaraguans because ambition killed the right of their nationality. That’s how it is, it’s an elementary principle, he who betrays his country stops being from that country, they stop having a country and that’s why they are called stateless.”
Ortega, who is increasingly adding longer and longer periods of absence, was last seen officially on December 27, 2023.
At 78 years of age and with more than 17 consecutive years in power – since his return to the presidency in January 2007 –, Ortega increasingly reduces his public appearances, limiting himself to anniversaries of births or deaths of national figures, anniversaries or graduations of the Police and the Army – obedient executors and accomplices of repression under more than five years of the de facto police state – and a few protocol events.
In contrast, his wife, Nicaragua’s vice-president and spokesperson for the dictatorship, Rosario Murillo, has been active publicly through the Ortega-Murillo propaganda media that she uses to talk about everything from the climate and the saints of the day to spreading her hate speech systematically.
