QCOSTARICA — Starting March 1, 2029, users of water services in Costa Rica will see an increase in their water bill because the regulator of public services, the Autoridad Reguladora de Servicios Públicos (Aresep), approved an additional charge.
The Aresep explains that this new amount, which will apply to subscribers of the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA) and the Public Services Company of Heredia (ESPH), will be used to protect water resources.
“This will allow us to maintain the financing of five relevant interventions in water matters. These new resources imply adjustments for those who are supplied by AyA,” said Carolina Mora, spokesperson for Aresep.

The charge will be calculated according to consumption and can range from ¢6 colones for homes to ¢14 colones for industries, based on the number of cubic meters used monthly.
According to information from AyA, on average a person consumes 180 liters per day, so a family of four members at the end of the month will have used 21,800 liters (21.8 cubic meters), so, according to the new charges, they will pay ¢152.6 for environmental protection.
The sources that will benefit from this financing are Barranca-La Paz; the Sardinal Aquifer, in Guanacaste; the Virilla River sector located in Coronado, San José; the Jorco River, in Aserrí; and the interventions in Santa Ana, Mora, Desamparados and San José.
