QCOSTARICA – Foreign Minister Arnoldo Andre Tinoco has announced that Costa Rica will grant political asylum to Venezuela’s opposition leaders Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez.
“The government of the republic announces that we are prepared to grant political asylum, and refuge in Costa Rica, both to María Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez, as well as any other politically persecuted person in Venezuela.
“In particular, this offer extends to those sheltered at the Embassy of the United States of America and the Embassy of Argentina in Caracas,” Tinoco said in a statement.

The government of President Rodrigo Chaves is one of those that has expressed its rejection of the proclamation of Nicolás Maduro as president of Venezuela after the elections held on Sunday.

The Costa Rican government also spoke out together with Argentina, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay to request a thorough review of the electoral material with the presence of observers.
