Costa Rican cinema stands out at two important international festivals in Korea

QCOSTARICA — After six years of its last participation, Costa Rican cinema returns to Korea this month, with participation in the Busan International Film Festival; to be held from October 2 to 11, and the Busan Latin Film Festival 2024, from October 17 to 20.

In the two events, national representation will promote local talent and content, with the premiere of the feature films “Memorias de un Cuerpo que Arde” and “La Piel del Agua”. It will also attend to identify potential clients or leads to enter the Costa Rican audiovisual market in 2025.

“The participation of Costa Rican cinema in these international festivals is not only an invaluable opportunity to make national talent visible, but also to attract investment and generate new alliances in the Asian audiovisual market. “We are excited to see how our offering resonates on these influential platforms,” said Marysela Zamora Villalobos, Costa Rican Film Commissioner.

The film “Memorias de un Cuerpo que Arde”, directed by filmmaker Antonella Sudasassi Furniss, premiered at the Busan International Film Festival, screening on October 4, 6 and 7. All screenings prior to its premiere were sold out.

Meanwhile, “La Piel del Agua”, directed by Patricia Velásquez, will debut at the Busan Latin Film Festival 2024, from October 17 to 20.

“We are seeing significant growth in Costa Rican cinema, and our goal is to consolidate that progress for the coming years. Participation in international events such as these allows us to project our potential not only as creators of quality content, but also as an attractive destination for audiovisual production, which will further strengthen the local industry and open new opportunities for Costa Rican filmmakers and professionals,” Zamora concluded.

The return to this market is supported by the Costa Rican Film Commission – as part of its strategy for the Asian market -, the Commercial Promotion Office of the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promoter (PROCOMER) in Korea and the Costa Rican Embassy in that country.

For the remainder of 2024, the Costa Rican Film Commission will participate in other international events in Saudi Arabia, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala and Uruguay. It will also meet with important producers and post producers from renowned global companies.
