Costa Rica will not receive African migrants

QCOSTARICA — Costa Rica’s President, Rodrigo Chaves, stated on his social media account that Costa Rica will not be receiving African migrants.

Chaves also refuted claims made by British media about negotiations between Ministries of Foreign Affairs regarding deportations.

“Regarding news that is circulating (to cause alarm) that CR is going to receive African immigrants, this is the real thing: we informed the United Kingdom that Costa Rica will not receive any overseas immigrants,” said Chaves on X (formerly Twitter).

“We have shared with the United Kingdom the challenges we have in immigration matters as well as those they have, and it is clear that Costa Rica will not receive any overseas immigrants,” said Chaves.

The statement by Chaves came on Monday, April 15, after The Times posted that the United Kingdom plans to deport immigrants to Costa Rica from Rwanda.

According to The Times, the British government’s Home Office and its Foreign Ministry worked for 18 months to find a place to carry out the deportation to countries that would include Costa Rica, Armenia, the Ivory Coast, and Botswana.

El Mundo and El Debate published similar reports.

The Express reported that in addition, the UK has also approached several South American countries including Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Brazil, and Colombia, but were viewed as less likely to be interested.
