Costa Rica’s Ministry of Health has announced new measures to prevent yellow fever from entering the country, responding to an uptick in cases across the Americas. During a press conference on Saturday, officials revealed updated case numbers, a targeted vaccination campaign, and the launch of a digital vaccination card system.
Yellow Fever Cases on the Rise in the Americas
According to the Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the Americas recorded 61 confirmed yellow fever cases in 2024. As of early 2025, the number has already reached 14, raising concerns about its growing presence. Traditionally confined to rural Amazonian regions, yellow fever is now appearing in urban areas, increasing the risk of cross-border transmission—including to Costa Rica.
Although Costa Rica has not reported any local cases, its location and high volume of international travelers put it on high alert. Given that yellow fever is transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause severe complications, the government is prioritizing preventative action.
Vaccination Campaign Focused on Border Areas
In an effort to protect the population, the Ministry of Health is launching a vaccination campaign targeting border regions, where travelers and at-risk groups frequently cross paths. While specific details are still being finalized, officials have indicated that individuals in contact with delegations from high-risk countries will be a priority.
A key aspect of the plan is enforcing a stricter vaccination requirement for travelers. Effective March 11, 2025, anyone entering Costa Rica from one of the 13 South American nations with yellow fever risk—such as Brazil and Venezuela—or any African country will be required to present proof of vaccination. This rule, introduced in late 2024, is now fully in effect, meaning travelers should prepare accordingly.
Introduction of Digital Vaccination Cards
To facilitate compliance, Costa Rica is launching a digital yellow fever vaccination card system. Travelers and residents can now digitize their vaccination status, making it easier to present proof when needed. The process involves visiting a local Health Governing Area to obtain login credentials, after which users can download their certificate as a PDF or QR code.
Costa Rica’s Minister of Health, Dr. Mary Munive Angermüller, emphasized the benefits of this modernization: “We’re updating with the times. This digital card means no more lost paperwork and faster verification—travel just got smoother.”
This initiative simplifies the process for those with valid vaccination records, whether issued locally or abroad, and helps ensure quick verification at border checkpoints.
Costa Rica’s Proactive Approach
Although the country has yet to experience a yellow fever outbreak, its strategic position in Central America demands vigilance. With the disease spreading closer to urban centers in neighboring countries, Costa Rica’s response includes a combination of vaccination drives, strict entry regulations, and digital verification tools.

For international travelers, it serves as a reminder to check their yellow fever vaccination status before their next trip.
