QCOSTARICA — This past weekend it was cold in Costa Rica, in fact, with the coldest days of the year, with temperatures below zero in more than one place for the first time this year.
Daniel Poleo, from the Climatology Unit of the National Weather Service, the Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN), confirmed that “not only are they the coldest so far this month, but they are the lowest in the entire year.”
Among the coldest spots were:

- Cerro de la Muerte: −0.5 °C
- Turrialba Volcano: −0.2 °C
- Irazú Volcano: 0.6 °C
However, Poleo clarified that “although they are the lowest of the year, they do not represent historical records. They are among the lowest temperatures recorded, but they are not the most extreme in history.”
In urban areas, low temperatures were also recorded. For example:
- La Unión de Cartago: 8.6 °C
- Rancho Redondo de Goicoechea: 11.6 °C
- Coronado: 12 °C
- Ochomogo: 13 °C
- Turrialba: 15.9 °C
Why?
Cold surge number 5 was the main cause of these extreme conditions. According to the meteorological warning issued by the IMN on Saturday, December 14, this phenomenon began to withdraw from the Caribbean Sea in the afternoon.
During the early morning Saturday, wind gusts reached 90 km/h on Cerro Buenavista, the road that goes to the Cerro de la Muerte and the Irazú volcano.
The winds on Cerro Cedral (Escazú) reached 83 km/h and on Cerro Chitaría (Santa Ana) 73 km/h.

Other areas such as Heredia, Cartago and Alajuela experienced winds of up to 55 km/h.
The force also caused a clear sky in 90% of the national territory, favoring an especially cold morning.
