Costa Rica ends 2024 with a new femicide

QCOSTARICA — When it seemed that the violence of 2024 was going to end with the armed attack on the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) – Judicial Investigation Agency, the authorities have just confirmed a new femicide.

According to the director of the OIJ, Randall Zúñiga, at approximately 8 pm Tuesday they found the body of the victim, identified as Carolina Mora González, 38 years old.

Mora had been reported missing the day earlier, Monday, December 30, telling her family that she was going to meet her ex-partner and the father of their 4-year-old child.

Supposedly, they were going to buy a gift for the child.

According to Telenoticias Channel 7 report:  “She left the house to meet her ex-partner to buy a gift for the child. At first, she said she was going to the Oxígeno Mall to buy the child’s gift. They do not live together. After that, my mother realized that she had not arrived. She was supposed to go to work at 4 in the afternoon at Cinépolis in Terrazas Lindora, but she did not arrive. The calls came in, but they hung up, we never got an answer,” explained Nelson Mora, the victim’s brother.

Witnesses assured authorities that they saw the suspect leave the property wet and with some kind of scratches.

The OIJ, with support from the Fuerza Publica (National Police) and the Municipal Police of Belén, searched for several hours a property that adjoins a shopping center, near the Ojo de Agua resort. At night they managed to find the body and confirm that it was the missing woman.

Randall Zúñiga, director of the OIJ, confirmed on his social networks that the main suspect was arrested earlier in the afternoon and that he had been captured on several surveillance cameras while he was with the victim.

“We unfortunately close the year with one more femicide. The body of Carolina Mora, 38 years old, was found a few minutes ago,” Zúñiga said.

The OIJ director advocated for a new year without violence against women in Costa Rica.

As to the attack on the OIJ, minutes before 7 pm Tuesday, a series of images show the two people who fired shots with a high-power weapon at the OIJ headquarters and the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Batán, Limón.

Preliminary reports indicated that authorities counted more than 20 shells. Zúñiga, explained that no injuries were reported from the attack and that there will be a “forceful” response.
