QCOSTARICA — The President of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, said that he “repudiates” the “fraudulent” reelection of Nicolás Maduro as president of Venezuela.
On Sunday, Venezuela its presidential elections, which were won by Nicolás Maduro, according to the official announcement by the Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) – Venezuela elections authority – six hours after the closing of the ballot boxes.
According to the CNE, Nicolás Maduro obtained more than five million votes (51.20%), while his main rival, Edmundo González, obtained 44.2% (more than four million votes).

“The Government of Costa Rica categorically repudiates the proclamation of Nicolás Maduro as president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which we consider fraudulent.
“We will work with the democratic governments of the continent and international organizations to ensure that the sacred will of the Venezuelan people is respected,” said Rodrigo Chaves, through social networks.
Maduro has been President of Venezuela since 2013, assuming the presidency on March 5, 2013, after Chávez’s death was announced. A special presidential election was held in 2013, where Maduro was declared the winner with 50.62% of the vote as the United Socialist Party of Venezuela candidate. He has ruled Venezuela by decree since 2015 through powers granted to him by the ruling party legislature.
Prior to his appointment to the vice presidency, Maduro had been chosen by Chávez in 2011 to succeed him in the presidency if he were to die from cancer.
